Aarthi and Phil Multicultural Celebrant Wedding Ceremony

Outdoor wedding ceremony with a couple and guests gathered around a floral-decorated ceremony table, with a celebrant speaking nearby.

Real Ceremonies by Sonal Dave

Their wedding was an outdoor wedding at Folly Farm. It was the hottest day of that year, and the views we had as we were up on a hill were amazing. Everyone looked amazing, and the wedding ceremony was full of colour, from the flowers to the outfits.

Meet Aarthi and Phil

Phil shared these words about Aarthi:

The first words that come to my mind are kind, patient and caring. I admire how Aarthi commits to the relationships she holds with those who mean something to her and puts the work into maintaining those relationships – I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone as dedicated to this as she is. Aarthi is very easy-going, relaxed and empathetic. She doesn’t judge people and will accept you for who you are. As someone pathologically committed to self-improvement, I find this sometimes difficult, but being with Aarthi has helped me to accept myself and learn to relax and let go more.

Aarthi is an amazing dancer, and I love seeing the thought and care that goes into her choreography. Even more, though I enjoy hearing her stories about teaching young people to dance – it shines through that this is the part she loves most. My favourite thing about Aarthi is her childish, mischievous, silly side, which comes out when we (infrequently) dance together.

Over the years I’ve known Aarthi, she’s become more confident, ambitious and sure of herself, which doesn’t come as a surprise to me but should: she’s relocated her entire life to a country with alien traditions, culture and weather, and has found her own way of being here seemingly without any trouble. She now manages a large team of counsellors, and I do not doubt she will be CEO of the charity she works for within a few years. Aarthi takes life in her stride and dances through its travails, which is a lesson to me.

Aarthi shared that

Phil constantly surprises me. He’s intelligent (sometimes too intelligent), silly (I get to be a child with him) and inhibited. What I admire the most about Phil is his passion, drive and thoughtfulness.

Phil’s a walking encyclopaedia—I’ve always told him that it is his best and worst feature. I am in awe of his ability to retain knowledge of nearly everything, but it’s also bloody annoying when he constantly knows the answer.

Five years later, Phil still remembers little facts or mundane details I may have mentioned in passing – he would still buy a book or gift of something I’ve mentioned being interested in (e.g. He got me a calligraphy book when I mentioned in passing that I would like to try it or would cook me my favourite meal when he knows I’ve had a stressful day at work)– his thoughtfulness is a constant surprise and one I feel very grateful to be on the receiving end of.

Planning the Ceremony

The planning for Aarthi and Phil was a pretty easy journey. Aarthi and Phil had a clear vision of what they wanted, and my role was to help them realise their vision by placing the different parts of the ceremony and rituals in a way that respected them both as individuals and as a couple while respecting their cultures as well.

They were both so down to earth and easy to work with as a couple. There were no Bridezillas here, but there was definitely lots of kindness, compassion and love.

I remember their ceremony being on one of the hottest days of the year, which had its challenges. But when I looked at the couple together through the ceremony, their smiles and whispering to each other, they just felt right as a couple.

What Made this Multicultural Celebrant Wedding Ceremony Special

Their wedding was an outdoor wedding at Folly Farm. It was the hottest day of that year, and the views we had as we were up on a hill were amazing.

Everyone looked amazing, and the wedding ceremony was full of colour, from the flowers to the outfits.

The ceremony included welcoming Phil in a traditional Tamil way, the Ganesh Puja, exchanging garlands and readings. We also had the couple’s story, thanking the parents and the Taali, similar to the Mangalsutra. Phil places the Taali on Aarthi to protect her. We then had the traditional phera, the commitments and the ring exchange to end the ceremony.

Testimonial

Sonal was our wedding celebrant for our fusion ceremony. We had spoken to multiple celebrants by then and unlike most of the others, she never tried to introduce or force any of her ideas on us – she simply listened and made suggestions that she felt were appropriate to the ceremony. She continually checked in with us during the period leading up to the ceremony and also helped organise our bridal party, who would have been very nervous without her help. She made it very simple and easy during our multiple wedding moves over Covid and gave us things and ideas to think about as well. She was pleasant and lovely and took the time to interact with our families and guests. We recommend her so much!! Thank you very much, Sonal! Xx

Neel and Olivia Multicultural Celebrant Wedding Ceremony at Northbrook Park

It was a beautiful summer's day, and the sun was out, offering a Vit D top-up opportunity.  The ceremony started with a loud and energetic Jaan, with a dhol player, and everyone joined in the fun and even learned a few dance moves.

Tom and Sumi – Multicultural Celebrant Wedding Ceremony

I opened the ceremony with an Indian and English welcome and ensured all guests understood what would happen, including their roles. The first ritual was the Bor Boron, a Bengali tradition in which the bride's mother welcomes the bridegroom Tom. He walked down the aisle with his mum, and when he got to the front of the aisle, Sumi’s mum and other female elders from the family welcomed him with a pitch sound known as an ululation to celebrate and give joy to the wedding.
