Scattering of Ashes Ceremony
Specialising in Hindu and multicultural ceremonies
Honour the deceased and provide a meaningful farewell, and celebration of their life.
It is believed that this allows the soul to return to nature and its journey towards moksha (liberation from rebirth).
Creating a unique scattering of ashes ceremony
This ritual can be led by a priest or a celebrant depending on if you want a religious or spiritual ceremony and symbolises returning the physical body to the Pancha Bhutas, the five physical elements of cosmic creation (earth, water, fire, air, space) and helps the soul achieve spiritual freedom.
The ceremony ritual also known as a puja involves placing a photo of the deceased with a lit candle, incense stick and petals in a place that everyone can see. Mantras, prayers and bhajans can be said and sung. Family members can share memories, recite a poem and take a moment of reflection. When it is time to release the ashes, there are options to place messages written on biodegradable paper in the water with petals before the ashes are scattered or placed in the water.
This ceremony ritual is an opportunity to honour the deceased and provide a meaningful farewell, and celebration of their life.
What Can Be Included in a Hindu Ashes or Memorial Ceremony?
Every ceremony I create is personalised. There is no single “correct” format, and you may already have ideas that are meaningful to you and your family. I will always listen first and guide gently.
Elements may include:
Readings, Mantras, and Shlokas
From sacred texts, prayers, poems, songs, or words that held personal meaning.
Music and Singing
Recorded or live music. Where appropriate, I can sing prayers, bhajans, hymns, or meaningful songs, with live music.
Puja Elements (used sensitively and by choice)
- Camphor or a diya/tea light
- Agarbathi (loban incense)
- Guggal (used mindfully for allergies)
- Unity candles for shared participation
- Biodegradable urns
- Floating biodegradable candles
- Dry flowers
- Water based paper to leave a last message
Participation can be collective or led by one family member and always guided by what feels right for you.
Who I Am and How I Support Hindu Families
I am Sonal Dave, a Hindu Brahmin and an experienced Hindu Celebrant specialising in funerals, memorial ceremonies, and the scattering of ashes. I work with families across the UK who are seeking a ceremony that is respectful, meaningful, and aligned with Hindu beliefs, whether religious, spiritual, or somewhere in between.
My role is to support you during an incredibly vulnerable time, to listen carefully, explain traditions clearly, and guide you with calm compassion.
I understand the cultural expectations, the emotional weight, and the practical considerations that come with loss. I do not believe in rigid templates. Instead, I help families create ceremonies that honour their loved one’s life, values, and journey, while remaining sensitive to modern family dynamics, accessibility needs, and individual beliefs.

Funeral Ceremony FAQ
Will you write the ceremony for me?
I will take the information from you and create your first draft that you get to review. I will amend this once I have your thoughts.
This usually takes a couple of times before we get to the final version. This means no one can suddenly decide to talk on the day as we have finalised the ceremony and confirmed that it works within the time limits we have.
Is there anything that has to be included in a service?
There is nothing that has to be included. I create a bespoke ceremony based on the wishes of your loved one who has passed away in consultation with family.
Do you cater for people who are not religious?
