What does an independent funeral celebrant do?
The main job of a funeral celebrant is to help and support the bereaved family with planning the funeral to make sure it celebrates the life of the person who has passed away. Most celebrants work independently and will have many years’ experience.
Along with working closely with the funeral director the role of the celebrant also extends to organising certain aspects of the funeral such as agreeing the order of service or attending to the wishes of the deceased such as scattering of the ashes.
Organising the funeral
There is a lot that goes into planning funerals, some of which can be emotionally difficult for the family and loved ones involved.
The celebrant can aid in the organisation of the day itself and will often have an initial face-to-face meeting with those involved to get an idea about the deceased, their life and how their family would like to tell their story.
While a funeral can be upsetting for those involved it should be seen as a celebration of life and the celebrant will be able to advise on everything from poems, readings and music allowing family and friends to get involved to add a sentimental touch to the proceedings.
Order of service
During the meeting with the celebrant you can discuss the order of service and how it will proceed from when guests arrive, to the readings and final laying to rest of the coffin.
Depending on where the service is being held will depend on additional requirements for the day including the location.
Religious & spiritual content
The funeral celebrant will also be able to advise on the best format for a person who had strong religious or cultural beliefs. If the person in question has been cremated, they may have left instruction on where they would like their ashes to be scattered.
They can help deliver religious and spiritual content into the service at the wishes of the family and meet the expectations of these cultures, religions and beliefs that need to be respected when it comes to the passing of an individual.
Funeral requirements
Once the celebrant has all the necessary information and personal requests, they can produce the ceremony as well as recommendations and requirements that need to be put in place, before, during and after the ceremony.
